This week, Wednesday has been looking through the Gressenhall's MODES database, to find historic images of the workhouse and the inmates living there. I have been looking through some beautiful historic photographs of Gressenhall, and thought I would share some of my favourites! The beautiful image below shows the outside of the building, taken when the workhouse had been repurposed as a care home. There are hundreds of pictures of the residents dancing, celebrating and going about their lives. The next image shows workhouse children outside the school, pre-1912. It’s incredible to think that they grew up in the building over a hundred year ago! Finally, one of my very favourites is this photograph from 1926, showing the effort that went into decorating for Christmas. This image was taken in the dining hall by WJG Powley, a photographer from Beetley village.

Lovely photographs. I wish we had more at Llanfyllin! Only two or three of people before the 1950s.
